653 Family Lofts

- 653 Galtier Street -

The structure that is now 653 Family Lofts was built in 1910 and expanded in 1917. Designed by Mark Fitzpatrick, the three-story buff brick factory building was the originally home of Guiterman Family Men’s Apparel. A wide variety of items were manufactured here over the years. It also was the home of the Brantjen and Kluge printing press. Presses were built here, and printing supplies were sold out of this building. After that company moved to Wisconsin the building housed other uses including storage.

In 1992 Artspace worked with other nonprofits to turn the building into 36 apartments, with a focus on creating an artists’ community. The original apartment building name was Frogtown Family Lofts.
