Euclid View Flats

The Euclid View Flat Apartment building was designed by Hermann Kretz and built in 1895. Kretz, a German-born architect who immigrated to America in 1880, was responsible for other local buildings including the Commerce building and the Saint Boniface Catholic Church. The Euclid View Flat Apartment building is a blend of Queen Anne and Romanesque Revivalist styles.

In Saint Paul during the late nineteenth century, the population was rapidly increasing. In 1885, the population of the city was 111,369, and by 1895, the population had increased to 140,292. At the same time, 78.7% of the housing stock in the city was comprised of single-family homes and only 1.4% were apartments. During this time, middle and upper-class families lived in single-family homes and apartments were for the lower income families. The Euclid View Flat Apartments were unique because they were intended for middle-class families. The spacious twelve apartment units were appealing to middle-class families accustomed to single-family homes.

The building of a cable line railway in 1891 made the location of the apartments in Dayton’s Bluff possible. Dayton's Bluff was a desirable location but until 1891, it was not an ideal place to live because it was difficult to get to downtown Saint Paul. The cable line railway connected Dayton’s Bluff and Downtown with an easy and quick commute that encouraged more people to live in the area. Dayton’s Bluff was an ideal location to debut the new middle-class apartment building as it had a view of the Mississippi River and downtown Saint Paul.

Later during the Great Depression, the apartment units were split to create 24 units. This change not only made rent more affordable but also provided housing for more families. These 24 units remained functional for the following 90 years. Sadly, Euclid View Flat Apartments fell into poor conditions in the 1970s and continued to deteriorate until 2011 when the city of Saint Paul bought the apartment building with the intent to partner with a developer to rehabilitate the apartment building. The apartments now offer affordable housing to low and middle-income families. In 2013, the apartment building was recognized as a locally historical place for its architectural significance.
